Needing to think less.
Research on expert performance has consistently shown that highly practised skills become increasingly automated. Through repetition, the brain reduces the need for conscious control, allowing attention to focus on what is happening rather than on how each movement should be executed.
That efficiency is one of the greatest advantages experts possess.
It is also one of the easiest things for pressure to disrupt.
Imagine driving along a familiar road.
You have completed the journey hundreds of times. Most actions happen without deliberate thought. You are aware of the traffic, pedestrians and changing road conditions, but you are not consciously calculating the exact angle of every steering movement.
Now imagine someone sitting beside you saying:
"Think carefully about exactly how much you're turning the wheel."
"Pay attention to your feet."
"Are you sure you're pressing the brake correctly?"
The advice sounds reasonable.
It would probably make you a worse driver.
The problem is not a lack of knowledge. The problem is that conscious attention has been redirected towards processes that normally work best outside conscious awareness.
Pressure can produce something remarkably similar.
